THE SHADOW BOX, by Luanne Rice

Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars

On the afternoon of her art show opening, Claire Chase is attacked by a hooded figure and left for dead in her garage in an exclusive gated shoreline community.  When she regains consciousness, she escapes into the woods.  She believes her husband, now a candidate for governor, is responsible not only for the attack on herself, but for the death of a friend years ago.  Everyone loves him, but she knows his good-man image is a facade.  Now she needs proof to expose him for the sociopath he is, and maybe bring down some of his uber-rich cronies at the same time. ----- Well developed characters are the backbone of this intricate mystery.  The secondary characters you trust in one chapter, are the same ones you suspect in the next, and then you doubt yourself in the third. Character juxtapositions will leave you guessing who is on whose side right until the end. Well plotted, believable, and fast paced.  Claire is a strong woman determined to create her own ending.
