Orphan X - Book #5
Book: Max Merriweather's cousin gave him an envelope to hold in case anything happened to him. Now that cousin has been murdered, and Max has an envelope the bad guys want very, very badly. Enter Orphan X, also known as Evan Smoak, once part of a super secret government program, now a freelance problem solver with a MacGyver-like gift that has proven invaluable for helping the helpless. But what happens when Mr. Smoak can't identify the head of the snake? ----- I loved the previous Orphan X audiobooks. This one, though it continues Mr. Hurwitz' undeniably clever problem solving, seems to rely too much on violence instead of the quiet, heart pounding tension he built in previous stories. The usual cast of background characters are used more fully here, and that builds a more complete world for Orphan X to inhabit which I enjoyed. His relationships can be rocky, but always fun. Mr. Hurwitz hints that this may be Evan Smoak's last mission, and it made me wonder if he was just running out of ideas, but the last words turn that possibility upside down. Looking forward to book six.
Narration: As always, Scott Brick's narration is solid and well paced, making the implacable Orphan X come alive--a hero for the little guy.
