THE GIRLS WITH NO NAMES, by Serena Burdick
Historical Fiction -- 4 stars
In 1910 New York City, Luella and Effie lead privileged lives in a grand home just down the hill from the House of Mercy, an historical American Magdalene laundry where girls who break the rules spend their days working off the price of their sins. One day, Luella and Effie discover a gypsy camp in the woods near their home. What follows is a story of rebellion, misunderstandings, destruction, and resilience. ----- A fast moving story that intertwines three highly diverse existences, without losing the honesty of each one. Both sad and empowering, the distinctly different characters are all realistic and well developed, their plights melded into a satisfying historical whole.
