A SINGLE THREAD, by Tracy Chevalier

Literature, Romance - 3 1/2 stars

Violet Speedwell, having lost both her brother and her fiance to the Great War, finds herself left alone with her unpleasant and unforgiving mother.  Deciding that enough is enough, Violet packs up and moves to Winchester where she stumbles onto a church service honoring the broderers--women who embroider kneelers for the cathedral.  Her life expands with friendships and love offered, but it is on a solo walking vacation that she finds the love she wants--only this time it is forbidden. -----  Even a near formulaic love lost/love found story can be good in the right hands.  Violet is  fully drawn character who finds herself in situations that are sympathetic and colorfully detailed.  The ending is too bitter sweet to be completely pat, though it fits with the world this story of love, friendship, honor, and faithfulness tells.
