A HAT FULL OF SKY, by Terry Pratchett

Fantasy -- 4 1/2 stars

Discworld - Book #32, Tiffany Aching - Book #2
Tiffany is starting her witch apprenticeship far from home.  So far she hasn't learned much about witchery, but she has learned a lot about chores.  Unbeknownst to Tiffany, an invisible being that cannot die is hunting her and wants to take over her essence.  While Mistress Weatherwax is aware, there is little she can do to help.  How do you fight something that can't be killed, especially if it's living in your head? ----- The Wee Free Men make a repeat appearance--all thick Scots brogue and as innocently funny as ever.  The lessons passed on to Tiffany--the best witch is the one who uses her gifts to help the least among us without bragging or flashy wands--are tucked into an excellent story of growing up, making friends, and learning to be you.  It was interesting to me that the book recommendation that started me on this series, Book 4 - I Shall Wear Midnight, gets uttered by Tiffany as a lesson learned that prophecies where these stories and she are headed.  I read a comment by the author where he said adults who write to him ask if these are supposed to be childrens' books.  The simple innocence made me wonder too, but then Harry Potter wasn't written with adults in mind either.  Forget audience targets, just sit back and enjoy.
