THE MUSEUM OF EXTRAORDINARY THINGS, by Alice Hoffman

Literature -- 4 stars

Coralie's father owns The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island freak show, where she is one of his "performers."  But times are changing, and freak shows just aren't bringing in the crowds like they used to, and now a new type show is opening across the midway.  Coralie, who is growing up and rebelling against what she sees as her imprisonment, begins to escape her father's grasp and meets an Russian immigrant who photographs the aftermath of the Triangle Shirt Factory. Another fire, this one on Coney Island could put an end to everything Coralie knows. ----- An intricate story of growing up in a tumultuous period of American history, part romance, part expose, a story to remember and a heroine to cheer for.
