THE CLOCKMAKER'S DAUGHTER, by Kate Morton

Literature, Ghost Story -- 5 stars

A summer artist colony in a house on the bend of a river ends with a dead finance, a missing diamond, and the disappearance of an artist's model. A century and a half later, an archivist discovers drawings of a house she recognizes from her mother's bed time stories--a house on the bend of a river--a house she is determined to find.  Add in a child sold to a family of con artists, a young woman who sees the house while on her honeymoon and then returns with her two small children to escape wartime London, a young boy who grows to adulthood in thrall of the house, a jealous elder "sibling," a young sister thinking to save the day.  All are connected in this circular and intricately plotted story of love and loss, and the repercussions suffered because of one simple act of chance.  A story to wrap yourself in like a warm blanket with an ending as heartbreaking as it is unexpected.  This may be Kate Morton's best yet.
