Inspector Ian Rutledge Series - #23
Book: England, shortly after the end of World War I. Following his sister's wedding, Inspector Rutledge is driving aimlessly late at night when he comes across a young woman standing over the body of a young man. She says they were returning from a dinner party when they saw a man standing in the road and stopped to help. The stranger, seemingly with no provocation, shot her companion and disappeared into the woods. The victim, Stephen Wentworth, is a bookshop owner in the small village of Wolf Pit. He is reviled by his family, but otherwise a well-liked young man, so who would want to kill him? And why does his family hate him so? And how did the killer know he would be on that road that night? And what does an ancient book have to do with anything? ----- The questions are all tied up in the end, with enough twists, turns, and surprise suspects to keep you turning pages.
Narration: Simon Prebble is the perfect narrator for this series. His British accent fits comfortably with the characters and the period. Listening to him, you get the feeling all the uncovered clues are a surprise to him too, that he is discovering the truth along with you.
