INTO THE WATER, by Paula Hawkins
Mystery/Thriller -- 4 stars
Three hundred years ago, a suspected witch was drowned at a bend in the river that runs through this small town. Since then, so many women have thrown themselves off the cliff above the bend that locals call it the Drowning Pool. One resident, the single parent of a teen-aged daughter, has decided to write a book about those lost women, and some of her fellow citizens are not too happy about it. When the best friend of the writer's daughter and then the writer herself are found drowned there, everyone in town is a suspect. The delve into "why" is woven sympathetically around people who have known each other all their lives--until they realize they never knew each other at all. Well written, with interesting, real characters living with the consequences of their own personal histories.
