HOUSE OF RECKONING, by John Saul

Ghost Story -- 3 stars

Sarah Crane's mother is dead; her father is in prison.  Sarah is in foster care.  Sarah is a gifted artist and an outcast.  Her only friends are her art teacher, Bettina Phillips, and Nick Dunnigan, a boy who hears voices.  Ms. Phillips lives in a decaying, ancestral mansion behind a high gate.  When Sarah visits the mansion, she creates savage paintings she doesn't remember creating.  John Saul has made a career out of writing formulaic tales of hauntings and things that go bump in the night.  House of Reckoning is no different--a dead parent, a sad child, the evil foster family, a friendly misfit.  Add in the moldering mansion and a benevolent adult and you've got his entire palette.  I enjoy his books once in a while. They may not be very original, but they are always a fast and fun read.
