Chye Hoon is a rebel.  She wants to go to school like her brothers, but Malayan tradition denies her her dream.  Instead, she gives in and learns to cook, marries a Chinese man, and raises a family.  But it's the rebel in her that keeps the them all going.  I loved this book.  The characters, the Malayan history, the traditions, the culture, were all fascinating.  A second book continues this family's story.  It's on my wish list.
